Experts largely advocate for an overhaul of gun laws. A 2025 study highlighted a correlation between more lenient gun control laws and higher rates of pregnancy-related firearm homicide. Research published in the American Journal of Public Health also found that the legal purchase of a handgun is associated with a long-lasting increased risk of violent death. Kerri Raissian, from UConn’s ARMS Center, emphasizes the urgent need for gun law reform, noting that firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teenagers in the United States. Experts point to the effectiveness of laws mandating secure firearm storage, permitting, minimum age requirements, background checks, and emergency risk protection orders (red-flag laws) in reducing firearm homicides. There is also concern among experts regarding the Trump administration’s approach, which is seen as sidelining public health professionals and disregarding evidence-based research on gun violence.
